Program Note: This piece is a representation of the five natural elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. According to Chinese philosophy, each element or “phase” feeds into another, and one cannot exist without the other. In this piece, I explored the “miniature”, and its expressive potential in solo and chamber music. I ultimately gained a better understanding of writing music that is brief, and at the same time, meaningful.
